Becky Allison

Dr. Rebecca Allison is a physician practicing cardiology in Phoenix, Arizona.  She currently serves as President of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, the first transgender person to hold that position.  Dr. Allison has served on the GLMA board of directors since 2004 and has chaired its Education committee. She has also chaired the American Medical Association's Advisory Committee on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues, and she is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health.

Dr. Allison has authored chapters on gender identity for the Encyclopedia of Stress and for Hormones, Brain, and Behaviour: 2nd Edition. She was an invited speaker at the American Psychiatric Association`s 2009 annual conference, where she spoke about gender identity disorder and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.  Dr. Allison resides in the Phoenix area and has been named several times as one of the "Top Doctors" in Phoenix Magazine`s annual poll.

Becky's website, drbecky.com, has served as an important community resource for information and support for transgender persons for many years.  Her personal gender transition in 1993 took her away from the deep South and the church where she had served as a deacon and a Sunday School Teacher.  Becky has found a more progressive spiritual home in the United Church of Christ, near her current home in Arizona.

Dr. Allison holds a bachelor`s of science degree from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, and she earned her medical degree magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson. She completed postgraduate training at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, and also at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Allison is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases and she`s a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.
